Tips for Enforcement of Tobacco-Free Policies

[x]

Post clear signage everywhere. Our staff can provide no-cost "Tobacco-Free School" signs to display in the school and on school grounds.

[x]

Communicate the policy to the entire school community. Use the school handbook, website and newsletter to share the Tobacco-Free policy with students, staff, parents and community members.

[x]

Remind visitors of the policy. Have a flyer or palm card that you can give to visitors to let them know about the policy. Violators may be unaware that they are breaking the rules.

[x]

Monitor problem areas. Identify the times and places where tobacco use occurs and assign staff to monitor these areas and report violations.

[x]

Announce the policy at special events. Publicize and enforce Tobacco-Free rules at athletic events, plays, music programs and school-sponsored activities off campus.

[x]

Educate adults and students who violate the policy. Consequences for violating the Tobacco-Free policy should be clear and consistent. Offer alternatives to suspension such as tobacco education classes.

[x]

Provide the NYS Smokers’ Quitline number. Offer resources and support for cessation to those who use tobacco on campus. New York State offers free help for quitting, including telephone
coaching.1-866-NY-QUITS (1-866-697-8487).

[x]

Enlist student and staff support. When the entire school community is invested in a Tobacco-Free school environment, they will help spread the norm and enforce the rules.
